OLD LETTERS

letters-1390398_960_720

The paper was old

It felt fragile

And thinly layered

In grey brown dust

Covered in faded ink

In romantic cursive

Scrawled elegantly

To someone long gone

He was an airman

She was a nurse

He was gunned down

She saved his life

He, the only survivor

She, his beautiful savior

They wrote letters

For years on end

They got married

Had children

And then…

The letters stopped

The last letter came

It was a dissolution

Signed and dated

Proof that love

Lives and dies

Drawing breath

Just as long

As someone is willing

To pick up the pen
